How to Clean Titanium Jewelry

Titanium is a popular metal for jewelry. Because it is the strongest metal available and still remains light weight and scratch resistant, many jewelers are keen on making all different types of titanium jewelry, including bracelets, rings, and earrings. However, even though titanium jewelry is durable, it is not immune to dirt. It is therefore, essential to know how to clean titanium jewelry properly. Like any other piece of jewelry, titanium is exposed on a daily basis to dirt, oil, and all other types of debris. By understanding how to clean titanium jewelry the right way, it will not only look its best but last for years and years. It is important to follow these instructions on how to clean titanium jewelry to ensure it does not discolor.

Soapy Bath

First, find a bowl and fill it with warm water and soap. The amount of soap used does not matter. However, do not take an abrasive detergent or harsh cleaning soap to the titanium jewelry. This can cause discoloration and possibly even scratch the jewelry’s surface. Submerge all the titanium jewelry for cleaning into the soapy water and let them soak for ten to twenty minutes.

Scrub it Gently!

When scrubbing the titanium jewelry, it is best to use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush to remove dirt and residue. Scrub the titanium jewelry in circular motions softly. Do not scrub the jewelry hard. If the titanium jewelry has been colored, rather than using a soft-bristled baby toothbrush, use a soft cloth instead. This will prevent the color from scratching during the cleaning process.

Rinse and Dry

Once the jewelry is done being scrubbed, rinse off the soapy water with warm water. Then, take an ordinary cotton swab and place it into some rubbing alcohol. Use the cotton swab and go over all the surfaces of the titanium jewelry. This will get rid of all remaining debris, oil, and bacteria not removed when soaking in the soapy water. Do not submerge any jewelry made with titanium straight into alcohol, as anodized titanium, for example, will fade due to prolonged alcohol exposure.

Take a new soft, clean cloth and wipe the titanium jewelry down and buff it. After, let it air dry for approximately 15 minutes. When letting the jewelry air dry, do not place it on a hard surface, but rather on top of a soft cloth or towel.

How Often to Clean

Depending on how often titanium jewelry is worn, it might only need to be cleaned once every few months. However, if an individual has a titanium wedding ring or another piece of jewelry that is worn often, they should wash it at least once a month. This way, the jewelry will remain shiny and magnificent looking.
