We know that the Earth has a magnetic field
but there is still a lot of research going on to try and determine how this field is generated. We simply don’t know enough about the insides of our planet to say for sure but there are a few theories that are generally accepted as explanations for the Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic field of the Earth is all around us but we can’t see it. To get an idea of what it looks like we can take a regular bar magnet and place a paper over it. If we sprinkle iron dust on this paper it will start making a pattern according to the magnetic field of the magnet. This is probably how the magnetic field around our Earth looks like where the North Pole and South Pole act much like the poles of a regular magnet and in theory the Earth is the magnet.The Origins of the Earth’s Magnetic Field
It is believed that there is some kind of mechanism or energy at the center of our Earth that produces the magnetic field around us. Something must be there to continuously power these fields but just what it is has not been confirmed. One theory holds that the inner core of the Earth is solid and spins in one direction. In top of this is a liquid layer which spins in the opposite direction. The dynamics of the core layers of the Earth are believed to create the magnetic field around it. The ideas for how this happens differ but most theories agree that this is where the origins of the Earth’s magnetic field are.A Protective Field
The Earth’s magnetic field protects us from the solar winds streaming out from the sun. The particles that come from the sun can have extreme energies that can damage astronauts and space craft. The sun also has a magnetic field and scientists have discovered that the alignment between our magnetic field and that of the sun influences how much radiation that makes it into our atmosphere.
In the last decade scientists have discovered holes in the Earth’s magnetic field and a warning was issued by NASA regarding solar storms in the year 2012. Just how a super solar storm can affect our daily lives is hard to tell. But the warning has been taken and preparations are made to handle the power outs and other problems that could arise if too much of the solar winds enter our atmosphere.
